Apply a Unit Type or Universe to All Variables#

A unit type describes the kind of entity being measured, such as a person or household. A universe describes the population to which the data apply. You can assign either of these to all variables in a dataset at once.

Apply a Unit Type#

  1. Navigate to a dataset.

  2. In the Advanced area of the Dataset ribbon tab, click Apply Unit Type to All Variables.

  3. Use the item chooser to select the unit type to assign.

  4. Colectica assigns the unit type to each variable in the dataset. A message shows the number of variables processed.

The selected unit type replaces any unit type already assigned to each variable.

Apply a Universe#

  1. Navigate to a dataset.

  2. In the Advanced area of the Dataset ribbon tab, click Apply Universe to All Variables.

  3. Use the item chooser to select the universe to assign.

  4. Colectica assigns the universe to each variable in the dataset. A message shows the number of variables processed.

Note

Applying a universe replaces each variable’s entire list of universes with the one you selected. Use this command when the same universe should apply to every variable.

Both commands process the variables in all logical records of the dataset. They change the variable descriptions, not the observations in the data file. Canceling the item chooser leaves the variables unchanged.
