Icon Reference

This page describes the icons used throughout Colectica Designer. Most icons appear in the navigator, but the same icons are also used in search results, breadcrumbs, item pickers, and the Links pane.

Navigator status icons

When working with a repository, the navigator displays a status icon to the left of an item’s type icon to show how the item relates to the version stored in the repository. Hovering the mouse over a status icon shows a tooltip with the same explanation.

Icon	Status	Meaning
	Local changes	You have made changes to this item that have not yet been published to the remote repository. Publish the item to send your changes to the repository.
	Remote update available	A new version of this item is available from the remote repository. Update the item to receive the latest version.
	Local update available	A new version of this item is available locally. This appears when a newer version of the item exists in your local items but your checkout still refers to an older version.
	Conflict	You have made changes to this item, but different changes are available from the remote repository. Review both sets of changes before publishing.
	Parent out of date	A parent of this item is out of date. To edit this item, first update the parent item.
	Missing item	The item is referenced by its parent but could not be found in the repository or in your local items.

Navigator toolbar

The two buttons above the navigator tree control what the tree displays.

Icon	Button	Description
	Restore root items	Clears any navigator search and restores the default top level items. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+T.
	Refresh	Reloads the navigator tree, in case changes have been made that are not yet reflected in the navigator. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+R.

Top level icons

The top level items in the navigator represent your home page, your checkouts, your local items, open files, and any remote repositories you have configured.

Icon	Item	Description
	Home	The home page, which provides quick access to your checkouts and local items.
	Checkouts	Items you have checked out from a repository for editing.
	Local Items	Items stored in the local database on your computer.
	Repository	A remote Colectica Repository to which you are connected.
	Repository (disconnected)	A configured remote Colectica Repository that could not be reached.
	File	A DDI XML file that has been opened directly.

Item type icons

Every item in Colectica has a type, and each type has its own icon. The icon appears next to the item’s name in the navigator, in search results, in breadcrumbs, and in item pickers. In the navigator, the same icon is also shown, slightly faded, for the folders that group an item’s children by type, such as Variable Sets or Code Sets.

Some related item types share a single icon.

Studies and projects

Icon	Item type	Description
	Project	A container for a collection of studies, series, and metadata packages.
	Series, SubSeries	A group of related studies, such as the waves of a longitudinal study.
	Study	A study or dataset, including its concepts, data collection, and data description.
	Metadata Package	A package of reusable metadata that can be shared across studies.
	Archive, Weighting Methodology	Information about the organization archiving the study, or the weighting used in the study.
	Funding	Information about the funding of a study.

Organizations

Icon	Item type	Description
	Organization Set, Organization Group	A set or group of organizations and individuals.
	Organization	An organization, such as a data producer, funder, or distributor.
	Individual	A person, such as a principal investigator.

Concepts and universes

Icon	Item type	Description
	Conceptual Component	The section of a study that holds its concepts, universes, and conceptual variables.
	Concept Set, Concept Group	A set or group of concepts.
	Concept	A concept measured by a study.
	Universe Set, Universe Group	A set or group of universes.
	Universe	A population or subpopulation described by the data.
	Conceptual Variable Set, Conceptual Variable Group	A set or group of conceptual variables.
	Conceptual Variable	A variable defined by a concept and a universe, without a specific representation.
	Represented Variable Set, Represented Variable Group	A set or group of represented variables.
	Represented Variable	A conceptual variable together with a specific representation, such as a code list.

Categories and codes

Icon	Item type	Description
	Category Set, Category Group, Category	A set of categories, or a single category.
	Code List Set, Code List Group	A set or group of code lists.
	Code List	A list of codes and the categories they represent.
	Managed Representation Set, Managed Representation Group	A set or group of reusable representations.
	Reusable Missing Values, Managed Representations	A reusable definition of missing values, or a reusable text, numeric, date time, or scale representation.

Questions and instruments

	Data Collection, Data Collection Methodology	The section of a study that describes how data were collected, including its questions and instruments.
	Instrument Set, Instrument Group	A set or group of instruments.
	Instrument	A questionnaire or other data collection instrument.
	Question Set, Question Group, Measurement Set, Measurement Group	A set or group of questions or measurements.
	Question, Question Construct, Measurement Construct	A single question, or the use of a question or measurement within an instrument.
	Question Grid	A question presented as a grid with rows and columns.
	Question Block, Measurement Item	A block of related questions, or a single measurement.
	Interviewer Instruction Set	A set of interviewer instructions.
	Interviewer Instruction Group	A group of interviewer instructions.
	Interviewer Instruction	An instruction to the interviewer or respondent.
	Control Construct Set, Control Construct Group	A set or group of the sequences, questions, statements, and logic that make up an instrument.
	Sequence	An ordered list of questions, statements, and other constructs within an instrument.
	Statement	Text displayed to the respondent or interviewer.
	If-Then-Else	A branch in the instrument flow, based on a condition.
	Loop, Repeat While	A section of the instrument that is repeated while a condition holds.
	Repeat Until	A section of the instrument that is repeated until a condition holds.
	Computation Item	A computation performed during the instrument flow.

Data

Icon	Item type	Description
	Logical Product	The section of a study that describes its variables and data layouts.
	Variable Set, Variable Group	A set or group of variables.
	Variable	A variable in a dataset.
	Variable Statistic	Summary statistics for a variable.
	Data Layout	The relationship between the variables and records in a dataset.
	NCube Set, NCube Group	A set or group of NCubes.
	NCube	A multi-dimensional table of aggregate data.
	Data File, Data File Group	A physical data file, or a group of data files.
	Physical Data Product	A description of how data are stored in files.
	Physical Structure Set, Physical Structure	A description of the physical format of a data file.
	Record Layout Set, Record Layout	A description of the position of each variable within a data file.

Processing and other metadata

Icon	Item type	Description
	Processing Event Set, Processing Event Group	A set or group of processing events. This icon is also used for other material, unit types, geographic locations, and statistical classifications.
	Processing Event	A description of data processing, such as cleaning, weighting, or coding. This icon is also used for other material and unit type items.
	Processing Instruction Set, Processing Instruction Group	A set or group of processing instructions.
	General Instruction, Generation Instruction	An instruction describing how data were processed or how a variable was derived.
	Quality Standard	A standard against which quality statements are made.
	Quality Statement Set, Quality Statement Group	A set or group of quality statements.
	Quality Statement	A statement about the quality of an item.
	Other	Item types without a specific icon.

Variable representation icons

The variable list in the Data File editor shows an icon for each variable indicating the type of its representation.

Icon	Representation	Description
	Code	The variable’s values are codes from a code list.
	Numeric	The variable holds numeric values.
	Text	The variable holds text values.
	Date Time	The variable holds date or time values.
